Barkskin is a level two awesome spell for any character.  What about a level 1 spell that does something similar, but not as well?

Daily Punch 8-20-15 Natural Armor spell for DnD 5e

How about some natural armor for DnD 5e?

Natural Armor

1st-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Self

Components: V, S

Duration: 8 hours

You harden your skin and gain a +1 natural armor bonus to armor class.  Unless you normally have natural armor, this armor stack with any other armor you wear.

  At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, increase the bonus you gain by +1 for each slot level above 1st.  If the spell ever gives you a higher bonus than any natural armor you normally, you may use the natural armor from the spell instead of your normal armor.

Let’s do shield summoning in DnD 5e!

Summon Shield

1st-level conjuration

Casting Time: 1 action

Components: V, S, M (a bracelet of small shields)

Duration: 8 hours

You conjure a shield of any type with you are proficient.  If the shield hits another creature, that is fine, but no other creature may attempt to use this shield.  If another creature attempts to use the shield, it instantly disappears.

  At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level, the shield is a +1 shield.  When you cast this spell using a 5th level spell slot, the shield is a +2 shield.  When you cast this spell using a 7th level spell slot, the shield is a +3 shield.

Saving Throw Will negates (harmless, object); Spell Resistance yes (harmless, object)

Magic armor gives a suit of armor a +1 enhancement bonus on defense and all the qualities of a +1 suit of that type of armor.

You can’t cast this spell on natural armor.  This spell does not change the material that makes up the suit of armor.

Magic Armor, Greater

School transmutation; Level cleric 4,  paladin 3, ranger 3, sorcerer/wizard 3

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S, M/DF (powdered lime and carbon)

Range Touch

Target One suit of armor

Duration 1 hour/level

Saving Throw Will negates (harmless, object); Spell Resistance yes (harmless, object)

This spell functions like magic armor, except that it gives a suit of armor an enhancement bonus to AC of +1 per four caster levels (maximum +5).

After give a suit of armor a +1 enhancement bonus, further bonuses may be spent to provide the armor additional qualities as if it were created with those magic qualities and traits.  This spell does not change the material the suit of armor is made of.

Drawde’s Everchaning Enchantment

1st-level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: V, S, M (a copper coin)
Duration: Instantaneous

Choose a spell of 1st level or lower that you can cast, has a duration of instantaneous, and requires a saving throw.  You are considered to have cast that spell.  Roll a d4 and a d20.  If you rolled even on the d20, add the d4’s result to the spell’s save DC.  If you rolled odd on the d20, subtract the d4’s result from the spell’s save DC.

At higher levels. If you cast this at 2nd level or higher, increase the spell level that can be cast by 1 for each level above 1st.

Daily Punch 7-2-15 Battle of Whits spell for DnD 5e

How about a spell that could backfire, but may also work spectacularly?

Battle of Whits

1st level enchantment

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 100 feet

Components: V,S

Duration: 10 rounds

Choose a creature you can see, and choose either Wisdom, Intelligence, or Charisma.  That creature and you both make saving throws of that chosen type.  Whoever has the lower saving throw is Stunned for one round.  The winner of the two saving throws repeats the process at the end of their turn until the duration of the spell ends.

Fortune and the Bold

1st-level necromancy

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 100 feet

Components: V, S, M (a die)

Duration: instantaneous

You point at a creature in range as the forces of life and death coalesces around the hapless creature.  That creature may elect to make a Charisma saving throw.  If the creature does not, that creature takes 2d10 necrotic damage.  If the creature does make the roll and succeeds, that creatures heals 2d10 damage.  If the creature makes the roll and fails, that creature is dealt 4d10 necrotic damage.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage dealt and healed increase by 1d10 for each slot level above 1st.

How about a spell for DnD 5e?

Ravages of Nature

1st-level enchantment

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 100 feet

Components: V, S, M (sand of the desert and water of a glacier)

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You choose a creature in range and that creature in instantly ravaged by the harshest environments on the planet.  That creature makes a Constitution saving throw.  On a success, the spell ends with no effect.  On a failure, that creature receives on level of exhaustion.  Each turn as a bonus action, you can cause that creature to make another Constitution saving throw.  On a success, they do not improve, but on a failure, that creature increases their exhaustion level by one.  You can continue to cause the creature to be exhausted until it succeeds three saving throws in a row, it dies, or the duration of the spell ends.

How about a spell for DnD 5e?

Inoj’s Repeating Insanity

1st-level enchantment

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 30 feet

Component: V, S, M (a riddle whispered into a bottle)

A creature of your choice that you can see in range is instantly confused by its surroundings.  The target must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or lose its reaction and action each round.

At the end of each the creatures rounds, it makes another Intelligence saving throw.  If the creature takes damage or is assisted by an ally, it gains advantage on the saving throw.  If it succeeds on this saving throw, it is no longer affected by the spell.

At Higher Levels. When this spell is cast at 2nd level or higher, the creature must make an additional Intelligence saving throw at the start of its next turn if it succeeded on the first saving throw.  Each additional level adds another round that the creature must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw or be affected by the spell.  If the creature ever fails a saving throw, then any additional round that the creature would have to make saving throws because of casting this spell at a higher level are then lost.
