TL; DR– More wizard options than you can shake a wand at.  90%

Basics– Behold the Book of Secrets!  Liber Arcanum contains new wizard and elf player options for DCCRPG.  This book contains the expected new spells but also has patrons, new subclasses of wizard, magic items, and more.

Mechanics or Crunch– Here is where the book shines.  I love DCCRPG, and play it every other week.  But, Goodman Games doesn’t make many player options.  This book is an excellent addition to any player wizard.  It’s got an impressive amount of spells as well as new patrons that come fully fleshed out.  Every spell get’s several pages describing it in detail as well as giving all kinds of interesting flavor.  It’s an easy drop into any DCCPRG game. 5/5

Theme or Fluff- Theme is another home run for this product.  I’d expect, in book of spells and patrons, spells and patrons, but the book goes a little further by adding little story bits as well as art to draw you in. The arts not perfect, but it does a great job of telling a story.  Furthermore, the book even has a cosmology.  That is way more than I expected from a simple spell splat book. 5/5

Execution– Of the areas I review RPG products on, this is the one area where this product struggles.  Some white space would really help this product.  The first chapter adds lots of content, but it’s pretty text dense.  A few tables and some more art would have really helped break that up.  On the subject of art, this product’s are is ok.  It’s not bad, but it’s not as good as the core DCCRPG book.  That can take away a bit from the text, but overall, I’m just happy to see some art here. A little more space, some organization changes, and some art touchups would help this product make it over the top.  3.5/5

Summary– It’s always good to read some more DCCRPG.  Strange fantasy is always a crowd pleaser, as is this book.  It’s a massive 300 pages with lots of content ranging from the expected spells to the unexpected planer diagrams.  That’s pretty impressive from a third party publisher.  However, it’s not without its faults.  The art is a bit off in places and the font size and spacing could use a bit of work.  However, that doesn’t detract from the awesome content in this one.   A well done tome that should be found in any wizard’s library.  90%

You have mastered the blade as well as the spell.  It is a hard road that not many can master as it is both mentally and physical demanding.  Many of called, but you however has risen to the challenge.  You are a wanted commodity for any side of a conflict, but your uniqueness also makes you a target foremost.

Hit points: An arcane warrior gains 1d8 hit points at each level.

Weapon and Armor Training:  An arcane warrior can use all weapons he or she wants, however, an arcane warrior needs one hand free to cast any spell.  Arcane warriors can wear any armor they can afford.  No worn armor interferes with spell casting of any kind.

Alignment: Arcane warriors have no natural drive toward law or chaos.   You my choose to study black magic as a chaotic wizard or follow control over the elements as a lawful wizard might.

Attack Modifier: Just like a warrior (DCCRPG p 42), you roll an extra die when you make an attack  called a magic die.  This die is added to the attack and to damage from his or her weapons or damage from any spell.

Caster Level: An arcane warriors caster level is equal to his or her current level.

Magic or Might: You are a unique breed of fighter and wizard.  You know spells like a wizard (DCCRPG p48) but also know the ways of the warrior’s mighty deeds of arms ( DCCRPG p43).  Spells are learned just as a wizard with the first three spells being selected at random at first level.  An arcane warrior may learn any spell that a wizard is able to.  Before you make an attack roll, you may select to cast a spell or to do a mighty deed.  If you select to make a spell, you’re attack must hit, the result on the magic die must be a 2 + the level of the spell you wish to cast, and then you cast a spell just like a wizard.  However, instead of adding the arcane warriors intelligence and level to the action die, an arcane warrior rolls his magic die and the action die and  adds the result to his or her intelligence score to determine the effect of a spell.  The second roll for the spell determines if the spell is lost or not.  An arcane warrior may elect to just use the magic die result from the initial attack roll or reroll with the second spell roll.  Casting a spell in this way is part of the same action die use.  Mighty deeds are resolved as normal per a Mighty Deed of Arms using the result of the magic die in place of the Deed Die (DCCRPG p 43).

Luck: An arcane warrior adds his or her luck modifier to all magic die rolls.

Action Die: A arcane warrior uses his action die for spells, attacks, or Magic or Might attacks.  At level 6, an arcane warrior gains a second action die for use in the same combat round’s action.

TL; DR– You brought a wizards to a gun fight! 93%

Basics-How about adding some guns to your DCC RPG game?  This book provides rules for adding firearms to your game spanning black powder cap and ball guns to laser rifles.

Mechanics or Crunch– Overall, the rules in this book are really well done.  This book provides different types of guns for however advanced a GM wants the guns to be in his/her home game.  The guns from different ages have distinct feels.  In addition to the standard gun y does x damage, there are new rules for duels as well as critical hit and fumble tables.  I like most of the added mechanics, but some of the things like a critical hit that disarms you I don’t like.  It’s good, but some things you might not completely agree with. 4.5/5

Theme or Fluff- DCC RPG has some of the best gonzo fantasy rules and themes of any RPG.  I love what I see here.  You can have modern day armies show up in a DCC RPG game and start drawing on your wizards and rogues.  It’s a blast! 5/5

.

Execution-This one was reasonably well laid out, but some of the tables were a bit off.  I could read everything well enough, but I would have liked the information separated into a table and then had a larger description of the tables contents in a separate area.  It felt a bit cluttered.  Nothing is horrible, but it wasn’t my favorite layout for a Crawl! magazine. 4.5/5

Summary-If you love DCC RPG as much as I do, then you are going to buy this anyway.  If you are not an addict, this is a good one.  It’s not my favorite, but it’s a good addition to the magazine.  There are some great rules for adding guns to a fantasy game.  It’s all optional, but if you want a touch weirder game by giving the warrior a blaster, this is a great way to handle the rules. 93 %

Ring Side Report-RPG Review of Crawl! #10

System– DCC RPG

TL;DR– Class options for demi-humans! 100%

Basics-Crawl! is the semi-official fanzine of the DCCRPG.  This month its options for demi-humans.  Instead of the basic race as level options frorm the main DCCRPG , this book presents Dwarven Priest, Elven rogue, Halfling burglar, and Halfling champion (fighter) as options for Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings.  The book also presents a system to take half levels or multiclass and the random stats tables for height, weight, build, hair type, eye color, and other physical features.

Mechanics or crunch– The one thing DCCRPG needs more of is options.  This is not a universal opinion, but I know I want more books for this system.  The class options here are still fairly balanced, and things I’d allow at my table.  If you want more options for your dwarf, this is worth a look.  Also, even the tables to add to your character are random, so you get more options, but don’t lose the randomness that is pervasive in the system. 5/5

Theme or Fluff-I know it’s not in the OSR spirit, but I don’t want to grow up to be a dwarf!  I like the idea of race shaping your character, but I want more options for that character.  This gives a few more options for what your characters can be instead of the basic dwarf has to be a dwarf idea from old school gaming.  The classes still fit the mold for DCCRPG, so they don’t stick out badly but really just add to the world.  The last half of the book is random tables to make your character more of a living person, not just a few stats, so that is great for story and character building as well. 5/5

Execution- All too often a fanzine will be crap because its one guy in a basement.  This one is not one of those.  This is well done with the same layout, art, and style of the DCCRPG main book.  It’s a quick read that’s priced right for its content and size. 5/5

Summary-Want some quick options for your demi-humans?  Get the book.  Want some ways to build your character a bit more than just a few stats?  Get the book.  Want more DCCRPG?  GET THE BOOK!  My only problem is I’d like MORE class options, but for three bucks, I’m ok with what I get in this book.  Hopefully, we will see the more options like this soon. 100%
