Barkskin is a level two awesome spell for any character.  What about a level 1 spell that does something similar, but not as well?

Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
DESCRIPTION

When this spell is cast, a creature’s out skin slightly hardens, and the creature gains a +1 enhancement bonus to the creature’s existing natural armor bonus. This enhancement bonus increases by 1 for every 4 caster levels above 1st, to a maximum of +5 at 16th level.
