Daily Punch 12-29-15 Spell Swing feat for DnD 5e

I think Eldritch Knights get a bit of the short stick (or sword!).  Let’s work on making them that much more awesome!

Spell Swing

Enemies fall before your sword as much as your spells, and you’ve learned to effectively combine the two to become a spell storm of destruction.  Gain the following benefits:

  • Increase your Constitution, Dexterity, or Strength by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • When you cast a wizard or sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, as a bonus action, you may take an attack action taking all attacks that action would grant you.

Daily Punch 12-28-15 DCC Funnel in Shadow of the DemonLord

We’re back from our extended break, and let’s start off with a big one!  I love the DCC RPG Funnel, and I love the Shadow of the Demon Lord system.  Let’s mix this peanut butter and chocolate together!

The Shadow of the Demon Lord Funnel

Players: Instead of creating and choosing one first level character, randomly roll a d6 (d8 with the Demon Lords Companion) four times to generate four characters.  Follow character generation rules as normal for each character.  Also, when a character drops to zero or fewer hit points, that character is dead!  No rolls for you!

GM: Instead of running a zero-level adventure, instead run a level one adventure.  Run the adventure as hard as normal, and players will drop like flies!  At the end, players will most likely be left with one character each.  That person gets all the experience points the would normally get putting them up to first level with a hell of a story!

Roll Race
1 Human
2 Changeling
3 Clockwork
4 Dwarf
5 Goblin
6 Orc
7 Faun
8 Hafling

Daily Punch 12-11-15 Underdark Etiquette optional background feature

I haven’t done some 5e stuff in a while, so let’s go back to that with the Out of the Abyss season and an optional background feature.

OPTIONAL FEATURE: UNDERDARK ETIQUETTE

You have met the hostile races the call the Underdark home, and while you might not be everyone’s friend, you didn’t end up on their menus.  If you fail a Charisma ability check against an Underdark creature, you may remake the check with disadvantage.  You must accept the results of the second roll.

Daily Punch 12-10-15 Bombardier Expert Path for Shadow of the Demon Lord

LET’S BURN STUFF!

Bombardier

It was a pleasure to burn!  Bombardiers are the children who liked to spend a little to much time in school, and were the people who liked to watch fireworks a bit to closely.  You’ve seen how the fire ticked, and now you can make it dance to your own tune.

BOMBARDIER STORY DEVELOPMENT

d6 Story Development
1 You’ve spent days upon days reading about the secrets of fire and have learned to master it.
2 A traveling alchemist came to your village and you learned his secrets when he was at the town fair.
3 You liked to take apart your fathers explosive he used for his job.
4 You were burned as a child and learned the secrets of fire.
5 You were apprenticed to a local demolition team.
6 You’ve just know how to mix the powders to make the fire dance.

 LEVEL 3 BOMBARDIER

Attributes increase two by 1

Characteristics Health +3, Power +1

Languages and Professions You can speak another language and add an academic profession.

Magic You discover a tradition or learn one spell

The Mystery of Fire You have learned and mastered the mysteries of fire powders.  As an action, you can change a spell into a bomb.  This bomb uses all the traits of a bomb from pages 27 of the Demon Lord’s Companion.  For each level of spell sacrificed in this way, you make one bomb.  These bombs will only last for 24 hours at which point they become inert components.

 LEVEL 6 BOMBARDIER

Characteristics Health +3, Power +1

Magic You discover a tradition or learn one spell

All Your Fingers There are only two kinds of people in your line of work-the good and the dead.  You gain a boon on all rolls to avoid fire and explosive damage from both magic and mundane sources.  In addition, reduce all damage you take from fire and explosive by half.

 LEVEL 9 BOMBARDIER

Characteristics Health +3, Power +1

Magic You discover a tradition or learn one spell

Ground Zero You’ve learned how to avoid blasts like the best.  When you use a bomb and are in the blast, you no longer take damage from your own bombs.  Furthermore, any mechanical, non-magic device you use that has a change to harm you through a failed roll deal half as much damage as before.  This effect stacks with All Your Fingers.

Daily Punch 12-9-15 Transfusion spell for Shadow of the Demon Lord

I’ve been thinking about this spell for Shadow of the Demon Lord for a bit. Should it be alchemy or should ti be technology?  How about it being a spell both could take?

TRANSFUSION                                        TECHNOLOGY/ALCHEMY  UTILITY 1

Target Two creatures within reach

________________________________

You quickly pull a connected series of tubes, needles, and vials from your pockets, jam one needle into one target and then another into the other.  One target loses hit points equal to its healing rate.  The other target gains gains hit points equal to double its healing rate.  Roll a d20.  On a one, instead of one target healing double, it loses hit points equal to its healing rate as the process works incorrectly and that character is racked with pain from a bad reaction.

Daily Punch 12-8-15 Acid Vial spell for Shadow of the Demon Lord

I want to make a new tradition.  We have technology, but what about alchemy?  I’m a biochemist, so let’s make some chemistry in Shadow of the Demon Lord!

ACID VIAL                                          ALCHEMY  ATTACK 0

Target One creature within medium range

________________________________

You quickly pull a vial of solvent off you belt and throw it at the target.  Make a Intellect attack roll against its Agility.  On a success, the target takes 1d3+1 damage and the target is covered in the acid.  For the next minute, the target will make an Agility challenge roll at the start of each of its turns.  If it fails, the target takes 1d3 damage.  If it succeeds, the target shacks off the acid and no longer needs to make any more challenge rolls from this spell.

Daily Punch 12-2-15 Conjure Turret spell for Shadow of the Demon Lord

One of the things I want for the Technology Tradition is the ability to conjure small, mechanical creatures.  Let’s start to make that a thing!

CONJURE TURRET         TECHNOLOGY UTILITY 1

Area A cure of space, 1/4 yard on a side, originating from a point within short range and resting on a solid surface

Duration 1 minute or until the creature runs out of ammunition

You  creature a small mechanical turret within the area.  The turret has the following stats:

SMALL TURRET

size 1/2

Perception 13

Defense 15 Health 12

Stregnth 6(-4) Agility 12 (+2) Intellect 10 (+0) Will 10 (+0)

Speed 0

Immune gaining insanity, blinded, asleep, fatigued, charmed, diseased, frightened, poisoned, stunned

ATTACK OPTION

Shot Bolt (medium range) +2 (1d6)

Daily Punch 12-1-15 Sonic Shove cantrip for DnD 5e

I’ve been designing spells for something secret and reading the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide.  Let’s combine those two.

Sonic Shove

Evocation cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 5 feet

Components: V, M (a weapon)

Duration: Instantaneous

As part of this action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails.  On a hit the target suffers the attack’s normal effects, and a sonic boom infuses the area.  That creature must make both a Strength and Constitution saving throw.  If it fails the Strength saving throw, the creature is moved 5 feet away, knocked prone, and you are no longer considered engaged if the creature does not have reach to attack you with one of its melee weapons.  If it fails the Constitution saving throw, the creature is dealt an extra 1d4 thunder damage.

This spell’s damage and thrown distance increases when you reach higher levels.  At 5th level, the spell’s thunder damage increases to 2d4 and the thrown distances increases to 10 feet.  The distance increases to 15 feet and 3d4 thunder at 11th level, and to 20 feet and 4d4 thunder at 17th level.

Daily Punch 11-30-15 Song Maestro feat for DnD 5e

Bladesingers seem cool (Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide p 141), but we can make it better…

Song Maestro

You are a master of music, and that song pours into your soul, sword, and your enemies.  Gain the following benefits:

  • You may spend two uses of your Bladesong at once.  If you do, increase your bonus to AC to double your Intelligence modifier and double your Song of Victory class feature bonus to damage.
  • Instead of using your Constitution modifier to determine extra hit points per level, recalculate your hit points using your Intelligence modifier instead.
  • Increase the bonus damage reduced by your Song of Defense class feature to six times the spell slot spent instead of five.
  • Gain one extra use of your Bladesong ability per rest.

Daily Punch 11-27-15 Trained by Another feat for DnD 5e

Some of the most interesting things from the Sword Coast Adventurers guide were the number of new class archetypes that were only for one particular race.  Let’s change that.

Trained by Another

You’re one in a million.  Among all the races of the realms, you found a way to train with another group.  Most there don’t like you and maybe a few there tolerate you, but at least one sees something special in you.  This one has trained you in the secret traditions of there race.  Gain the following benefits:

  • Choose a class path that you normally could not take due to race restrictions.  You can now take that class’s path, and count as a member of that race for other feats and abilities.  This feat does not give you any race specific abilities.
  • Gain 1 in one of the stats a member of that race would increase at character generation to a maximum of 20.  This bonus may be either in the primary stat gained by all members of that race, or in the bonus gained by a subgroup of that race.
